I Can Wait

I was sitting in this empty parking lot waiting for someone
looking for some truth in the rivulets of rain
on the windshield, on the hood, in the mud under the tires
I was waiting for some good to come into my brain

I was looking at some empty store fronts on the street
waiting for someone to fill their dusty retreat
from the sidewalk, from the roof, from all these cloudy skies
I was wondering what to do with all my life long lies

I can wait for fortune and forgiveness and fate
I can wait for the world to let go of its hate
I can wait for climate change and aging and faith
but I can’t wait for you to love me

I blew the horn to scatter birds up on the wires
maybe that would scare up something to make it all worthwhile
from the gutter, from the church, from along the river’s edge
I was waiting for a clue from heaven to fall down to earth

I can wait for traffic and tickets and time
I can wait for wishes and some empirical design
I can wait for a poetic license to rhyme
but I can’t wait for you to love me
