leaving the lands where our parents began
and laid the stones of our cities
we run from despair and sights we can’t bear
and board the trains now as refugees
as our country bleeds from the blows
turning away from the things left behind
we travel with bags, dogs and heartbreak
our children all wonder why life’s so unkind
and nothing we say can relieve the ache
once again watching as history repeats
as tyrants believe sending armies
is all that they need to forgive their deceit
and rationalize their psychotic disease
now we all wait in the dust and the cold
and watch the lives crumbling around us
unable to know how this war will unfold
